Scarves are my favorite clothing accessory. Recently, they’ve become more and more popular among men who wear it not only to protect themselves from the cold, but to also compliment their outfit and look awesome while at it.

There are a few types of scarves. There are large chunky kinds, thin silky kinds, really long ones and everything in between. There are also many ways to wear one. Depending on what clothes you’re wearing as well as the kind of scarf you have, you might want to experiment wearing it differently.

Over the shoulder

This is the most common way to wear a scarf. Simply place it behind your neck and throw one end over the opposite shoulder. It’s easy and doesn’t take a lot of effort.

Works best with: All types of scarves

Through-the-loop

This is my choice of style when the weather starts getting colder. It keeps your neck nice and warm as well as looks somewhat like a tie. To make it, simply fold your scarf in half, then place it behind your neck after. Pull the “raw” side of the scarf through the loop and pull down to tighten it.

Works best with: Light to medium weight scarves

Knot

Pretty self explanatory. Just put the scarf around your neck and make a relatively tight knot in front of you. Take the outside piece and place it in front of the knot neatly so it covers it. Like the previous style, it’s great for keeping yourself warm.

Works best with: Medium weight to heavy

Hanging knot

This is just like the knot, except the knot is hung low (around chest chest height) and loose. This is a very fashionable style that looks awesome with a lot of outfits.

Works best with: Long or medium, lightweight types

Wrap around

This is just wrapping the scarf around your neck, with both ends of the scarf displayed in front of your body. I prefer to keep this nice and loose.

Works best with: Light to medium weight types

Wrap around w/ Loop

Same thing as the wrap around but you take it one step further. All you have to do is just add a knot to the front. It’s a very busy style but with the right colors and patterns, this can look very stylish. This is another one that I like to keep loose. Works best in the summer with a silk scarf but also works during colder seasons with relatively few layers.

Works best with: Long, lightweight types

I hope you guys have a better understanding of how to wear scarves more fashionably. Mess around and try different combinations of scarf styles and weights and you’ll be surprised how much better they can compliment what you wear.

How to wear a scarf

Scarves are my favorite clothing accessory. Recently, they’ve become more and more popular among men who wear it not to protect themselves from the cold, but also to compliment their outfit and look pretty awesome.

There are a few types of scarves. There are large chunky kinds, thin silky kinds, really long ones and everything in between. There are also many ways to wear a scarf. Depending on what you’re wearing as well as what kind of scarf you have, you might want to experiment with the different ways to wear a scarf.

Over the shoulder
this is the most common way to wear a scarf. Simply place it behind your neck and throw one end over the opposite shoulder.

works best with: all types

Through-the-loop
this is my choice of style when the weather starts getting colder. It keeps your neck nice and warm as well as looks somewhat like a tie. To make it, simply fold your scarf in half, then place it behind your neck after. Pull the “raw” side of the scarf through the loop and pull down to tighten it.

Works best with: light to medium type scarfs

Knot
Pretty self explanatory. Just put the scarf around you and make a relatively tight knot in front of you. Take the outside piece and place it in front of the knot neatly so it covers it. Like the previous style, it’s great for keeping yourself warm.

Works best with: medium to heavy types

Hanging knot
this is just like the knot, except the knot is less tight and it comes down to your chest. This is a very fashionable style that can be worn in many ways. Wear it with a blazer or even just a buttoned-down shirt.

Works best with: long, lightweight types

Wrap around
This style is pretty much just wrapping the scarf around your neck, with both ends of the scarf displayed in front of your body. I like to keep it kind of loose whenever I rock this style, especially if I’m wearing only a sweater or a shirt.

Works best with: light to medium types

Wrap around w/ Loop
Same basic principles as the wrap around, except you make a knot in the front after the initial wrap. I also like to keep this style nice and loose. I like to rock this during the summer mostly with just a t-shirt, but it also works during colder seasons with relatively few layers.

Works best with: lightweight types

I hope you guys have a better understanding of how to wear scarves more fashionably. Mess around and try different combinations of scarf styles and weights and you’ll be surprised how much better they can compliment what you wear.

Which styles do you guys like?

You should have at least 10. In each color. In each pattern. In each material.

Walk down a busy office area in your city and observe every man with a shirt and tie. Out of them, how many of them are wearing their ties properly with the shirt that they’re wearing? The odds are probably 1 out of 10. Regardless of how expensive, sexy and expertly tailored the shirt you’re wearing, none of that shit will matter if you don’t know what kind of tie you should be wearing with it.

There are a few basic rules you should remember when you’re deciding which tie to wear.

The Rules

The first rule is that you should decide whether you’re going to wear a shirt that’s solid colored or patterned. You pick your tie based on the shirt you’re wearing and not the other way around. This is the most important principle.

The second rule is that you have to take colors into consideration. If you’re wearing a solid white, anything goes. If you’re wearing maybe blue or something bolder such as green, you need to think what colors would compliment it. For example, with a green shirt you would probably wear a tie that’s brown or orange-ish.

The third rule is that you CAN mix patterns and patterns. Be EXTREMELY careful. If you are unsure, just go with a safe bet. However, if you want to mix things up, wearing patterns with patterns can look extremely good. If you want to rock patterns with other patterns, you should always make sure they are NOT the same. Meaning, if your shirt has a plaid pattern, you can wear a tie with a dotted or striped pattern but you should not wear one with also a plaid pattern.

In order to pull this off perfectly, you have to pay attention to the varying weights of the pattern and the direction of the pattern. Normally, I don’t like to wear stripes with stripes. However, if your shirt has thin pinstripes and your tie has thick diagonal stripes, then it’s fair game. Same goes for any other pattern. Just experiment around various weights and patterns for both ties and shirts and see what you prefer.

Other advice

Never wear paisley. Leave that for your curtains or bed sheets.

If your shirt has a bunch of colors, wearing a tie with any of the color that’s featured on the shirt is usually okay. If the shirt has orange and blue lines, you can wear either an orange or blue tie. Be careful about what kind of pattern is on the tie though.

Anybody can notice when you’re wearing a cheap tie and that can ruin everything. Ties are surprisingly expensive, but they’re well worth it. Go to Macy’s and you can get some quality ones for about $25-$30. If you want to look even more proper, retailers like Banana Republic have very nice ties, but are quite steep ($60-$80). Look out for sales as well. ALDO Accessories has awesome skinny ties for under $18 which is a steal.

Try something bold and daring and let me know what you come up with!
